How to Prepare a 3D Model for Resin Printing: Hollowing, Drain Holes and Supports

3D model preparation for resin printing with hollowing drain holes and supports

Preparing a model correctly is one of the most important parts of successful resin printing. A beautifully sculpted file can still fail if it is hollowed badly, contains trapped resin, creates strong suction forces or lacks support in critical areas.

Start with a printable mesh

Check that the model is manifold, watertight and free from major mesh errors. Extremely thin surfaces, floating shells and internal geometry can create slicing problems.

Should you hollow the model?

Large solid resin parts can use a significant amount of material and may create large cross-sections. Hollowing can reduce material use and weight, but the shell must remain strong enough for the intended application.

Wall thickness

There is no universal wall thickness. Small display models may work with thinner walls than large structural shells. Consider model size, resin type, openings and expected handling before choosing a value.

Drain and vent holes

Hollow models need openings that allow uncured resin and cleaning fluid to escape. A second opening can help air enter while liquid leaves, reducing trapped pressure and making washing easier.

Orientation

Avoid placing a large flat surface parallel to the build plate when possible. Tilting the model can reduce peel forces, distribute supports and move marks away from the most visible surfaces.

Support strategy

  • Identify islands before printing.
  • Use stronger supports for heavy early sections.
  • Use lighter supports on visible details where appropriate.
  • Keep support contact points away from important faces and textures.
  • Review the sliced layer preview, not only the 3D view.

Check cavities before printing

Hidden sealed cavities can trap uncured resin and create long-term problems. If a cavity cannot be drained and cleaned, redesign it before printing.

Final checklist

  • Mesh repaired
  • Correct scale
  • Appropriate wall thickness
  • Drain and vent holes added
  • Orientation optimized
  • Supports reviewed
  • No unsupported islands
  • Sliced preview inspected
