PLA is one of the most popular FDM materials, but labels such as PLA+, Pro PLA and Tough PLA can make material selection confusing. These names are not universal standards, so the exact formulation depends on the manufacturer.
Standard PLA
Standard PLA is easy to print, dimensionally stable and capable of excellent surface quality. It is ideal for models, prototypes, décor, fixtures and many low-stress parts.
What is PLA+?
PLA+ usually refers to PLA modified with additives intended to improve impact resistance, layer adhesion or toughness. Because there is no single industry recipe, two brands of PLA+ can behave differently.
What is Tough PLA?
Tough PLA is generally formulated to resist brittle failure better than standard PLA. Some grades are designed to behave more like ABS in impact performance while retaining much of PLA’s printability.
Printability
- Standard PLA is usually the easiest.
- PLA+ may require slightly different temperatures.
- Tough PLA can need slower or warmer printing depending on formulation.
Strength versus toughness
High tensile strength does not automatically mean high impact resistance. Standard PLA can be stiff and strong but brittle. Modified PLA grades may trade some stiffness for better toughness.
Heat resistance
Most PLA-based materials still have limited heat resistance unless specifically engineered or annealed. For hot environments, PETG, ABS, ASA, nylon or other engineering materials may be more suitable.
Which should you choose?
- Use PLA for visual prototypes and easy printing.
- Use PLA+ when you want a more forgiving functional material.
- Use Tough PLA for parts that need improved impact resistance but still benefit from PLA-like printing.
