FDM vs Resin for Miniatures: Which Gives Better Detail and Value?

Miniature figurine for comparing FDM and resin 3D printing

FDM and resin 3D printing can both produce miniatures, but they are optimized for different priorities. Resin is usually the better choice when fine facial features, texture, lettering and smooth surfaces matter most. FDM becomes attractive for larger figures, prototypes and display models where cost, speed and durability may be more important than microscopic detail.

Detail and surface finish

Resin printing can reproduce very small geometry because the process cures thin layers with high XY resolution. This makes it excellent for 1:64 figures, tabletop miniatures and detailed character models. FDM creates visible extrusion lines and is limited by nozzle diameter and extrusion width, although a small nozzle and fine layer height can improve quality significantly.

Cost and production value

FDM material is generally economical for larger parts and hollow display pieces. Resin can deliver higher detail, but requires washing, curing, support cleanup and safe handling of uncured material. The right choice depends on the size of the model and what the finished part needs to achieve.

Strength and handling

Mechanical behavior depends on the exact material. Standard resin may be comparatively brittle, while tough or engineering resins can improve impact resistance. FDM materials such as PETG can be practical for models that will be handled frequently.

When to choose resin

  • Small-scale figures
  • Detailed faces and textures
  • Miniature accessories
  • High-end presentation pieces
  • Masters for painting and display

When to choose FDM

  • Larger models
  • Low-cost prototypes
  • Functional mockups
  • Props and display pieces
  • Parts where visible layer lines are acceptable

Which offers better value?

For small miniatures, resin often gives better value because detail is the primary goal. For larger pieces, FDM may offer a more efficient balance of size, strength and cost. Artin3D provides both FDM and SLA/resin 3D printing in Bangladesh and can recommend the suitable process based on your file, scale and application.
